Low back pain is the single most common reason people in Orange County look for a chiropractor, and most of it is not a disc emergency. It is a joint that has stopped moving properly, surrounding muscle that has tightened to protect it, and a pattern that repeats every time you sit for a long stretch, lift badly, or sleep in an awkward position.
The problem with waiting it out is that the protective muscle guarding becomes the new normal. Three weeks of a compensating gait teaches your body a bad habit, and undoing a habit takes longer than undoing an injury.
When low back pain is worth getting looked at
- Pain that has lasted longer than a week without clear improvement
- A sharp catch when you stand up from sitting
- Stiffness that is worst in the first hour of the morning
- Pain that travels into the buttock, hip or down a leg
- Recurring episodes that keep coming back every few months
- Pain that started after lifting, a fall, or a collision
What care looks like
First visit is an examination. Movement testing, orthopedic screening, and questions about how the pain behaves through the day. Some cases need imaging and most do not. You will be told which one you are and why.
Treatment generally combines spinal adjustment to restore joint motion, soft tissue work on the muscles that have locked down around it, and a short list of specific movements to do at home. The home movements are the part that stops it coming back.
A typical mechanical low back case improves noticeably within two to four weeks. If yours does not respond the way the examination predicted, that is a signal to re-examine or refer out, not a reason to keep booking visits.
Common questions
Back Pain questions
Can a chiropractor fix a herniated disc?
A chiropractor cannot un-herniate a disc, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. What conservative care can often do is reduce the irritation and the muscle response around it so the symptoms settle and you regain function. Many disc cases improve substantially without surgery. Some do not, and those need a surgical opinion.
How many visits will I need?
For straightforward mechanical low back pain, often six to twelve over a few weeks. You should be given an estimate in writing at the first visit and re-examined against it. An open-ended plan with no endpoint is a warning sign at any clinic.
Should I use ice or heat?
Ice for the first two days of a fresh, sharp injury. Heat for ongoing stiffness and muscle tightness. If you are unsure which stage you are at, that is one of the things the exam sorts out.
Is bed rest a good idea?
Almost never beyond a day. Current guidance for mechanical low back pain is to keep moving within tolerance. Extended rest tends to stiffen the area and slow recovery.
