Two things send most people in with neck pain: a screen and a collision. The screen version builds slowly over months of a forward head posture and shows up as an aching, heavy stiffness by mid-afternoon. The collision version arrives fast and hurts most on the second or third day.

They need different handling, which is why the examination comes before the treatment. Acute whiplash treated like ordinary desk stiffness gets worse, and desk stiffness treated too gently never changes.

Neck symptoms worth examining

  • Trouble turning your head fully to one side
  • Aching at the base of the skull that turns into a headache
  • Pain across the top of the shoulder or between the shoulder blades
  • Tingling, numbness or weakness down an arm or into the hand
  • Waking up with the neck locked several mornings a week
  • Neck pain that began after a car accident or a fall

What care looks like

The exam checks how far the neck actually moves in each direction, whether nerve tests are clean, and whether the pain pattern matches a joint, a disc, or referred tension. Findings are measured so change can be measured too.

Care usually combines gentle adjustment or mobilisation, soft tissue work through the upper back and shoulder girdle, and postural correction that targets the actual cause rather than the sore spot. For acute whiplash, early care is deliberately low-force.

Desk-driven neck pain also gets a workstation review, because no amount of treatment outruns eight hours a day of a badly placed monitor.

Common questions

Neck Pain questions

Is neck cracking safe?

Cervical adjustment performed by a licensed chiropractor after a proper examination has a strong safety record, and serious complications are rare. The examination is the part that matters, because it screens for the small number of cases where manipulation is not appropriate. Low-force techniques are available if you would rather not be adjusted that way, and they work.

Why does my neck pain give me headaches?

The upper three cervical joints share nerve pathways with the covering of the skull and the trigeminal system. Irritation there commonly refers pain up into the back of the head, behind the eyes, or across the temple. These are called cervicogenic headaches, and they often improve when the neck is treated.

My neck hurts only after work. Is that still worth treating?

Yes, and it is easier to treat at that stage. Pain that arrives with a load and leaves with rest is a mechanical pattern, which responds well before it becomes constant.

Do I need an X-ray for neck pain?

Not usually. Imaging is indicated for trauma, for suspected fracture or instability, for progressive neurological signs, or when the pain is not behaving the way the examination predicted.
