Sciatica treatment in Anaheim
Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The whole job is finding out what is irritating the nerve.

Tell us what hurts
Takes about 60 seconds. No obligation, no pressure.
That burning, electric line of pain running from the low back through the buttock and down the leg is the sciatic nerve complaining. What it is complaining about varies. A lumbar disc can press on the nerve root. An arthritic narrowing of the canal can crowd it. A tight deep hip muscle can compress it further down. Each of those responds to different care.
This is why sciatica is one of the worst things to self-treat off the internet. The stretches that help a piriformis case can aggravate a disc case, and the extension work that unloads a disc can be the wrong direction entirely for stenosis.
Sciatica signs
- Sharp, burning or electric pain from the low back down one leg
- Pain that worsens when sitting, coughing or sneezing
- Numbness, pins and needles, or weakness in the leg or foot
- Difficulty lifting the front of the foot when walking
- Pain relieved by walking but bad when standing still, or the reverse
- Symptoms in one leg far more than the other
What care looks like
The exam works out which source it is. Nerve tension testing, reflex and strength testing, and a directional preference assessment that shows which movements ease the leg pain and which make it worse. That single finding shapes everything after it.
Care then targets the actual source: spinal adjustment and traction or decompression for disc-driven cases, specific soft tissue work for hip-driven cases, and a graded home programme in the direction that helps. Progress is tracked by how far down the leg the pain travels, because pain retreating toward the spine is the reliable sign of improvement.
Red flags get referred immediately, not treated. Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle region, or rapidly progressing weakness in a leg are emergencies and go straight to a medical facility.
Common questions
Sciatica questions
How long does sciatica take to go away?
Many cases settle substantially within four to eight weeks with active care. Disc-driven cases with significant nerve involvement can take longer. What matters more than the calendar is direction: symptoms retreating up the leg toward the spine means it is working.
Can a chiropractor help sciatica or will I need surgery?
Most sciatica does not need surgery. Conservative care is the standard first step, and surgical referral is reserved for progressive weakness, unrelenting pain that has failed conservative care, or emergency red flag signs.
Should I stretch my hamstring if my leg hurts?
Frequently not. If the nerve itself is under tension, aggressive hamstring stretching pulls on an already irritated nerve and can flare the whole thing. This is one of the most common self-treatment mistakes we see.
Is walking good for sciatica?
Usually yes, in short frequent bouts within tolerance. Extended sitting is generally the harder position for disc-driven sciatica.
